People 1st drives productivity debate with launch of research report and new network

To coincide with the publication of their latest report today, The performance and talent management revolution: Driving productivity in hospitality & tourismPeople 1st is launching ‘The Wire’, a free-to-join virtual network where businesses can discuss the key themes emerging from the report, share experiences and hear from experts in the field. The new network aims to connect hospitality and tourism businesses of all sizes with leading brands that are making progress in tackling performance improvement and productivity.

The report, based on interviews with senior HR professionals across 40 large hospitality and tourism businesses, found that two thirds of major employers are actively considering how to improve productivity in a sector whose Gross Value Added (GVA) per head is just £25,899, only half that of the manufacturing and passenger transport sectors, and just below retail.

“With a crippling labour turnover rate of 75%, the three key drivers of change - rising costs, recruitment difficulties and changing employee expectations - are forcing businesses to rethink the way they invest in and develop their people,” said the report’s author, Martin-Christian Kent, executive director at People 1st.

“That’s why tackling productivity is increasingly important and why things that were traditionally seen as ‘HR issues’ like retention, performance management and learning and development are now viewed as business-critical. These challenges are compounded by the fact that we are in a period of political and economic uncertainty. We hope that The Wire will offer a valuable platform for collaboration and the sharing of ideas and best practice.”
