Runshaw College scoops inaugural People 1st-sponsored AA College Restaurant of the Year Award

27 September 2016

Foxholes Restaurant at Runshaw College, Lancashire, has been named the first ever winner of the AA College Restaurant of the Year award at the 2016 AA Hospitality Awards (26 September 2016).

The award, which is brand new for 2016 and sponsored by workforce development expert People 1st, was presented at the awards dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

The AA College Restaurant of the Year award seeks to uncover and reward the hard work of chef lecturers and student brigades that run college restaurants. It was open exclusively to colleges that have been accredited by People 1st and have also been awarded an AA College Rosette.

Foxholes Restaurant beat two other shortlisted finalists – The Atrium at University College Birmingham, and The Brasserie at Milton Keynes College – to be crowned the winner at the awards ceremony.

Martine Pullen, director of membership and consulting at People 1st commented: “Our huge congratulations to the hospitality staff and students at Runshaw College on winning this inaugural award. It was an incredibly hard-fought competition, but the standard of the Foxholes Restaurant team was truly outstanding.

“Congratulations must also go to the teams at Milton Keynes College and University College Birmingham which were two very worthy finalists – the quality of entries throughout the competition was extremely high, so to have been shortlisted is a real achievement in itself.

“We’re delighted to have worked in partnership with the AA on this award and to have given our accredited colleges another opportunity to be recognised for their outstanding work and dedication to the hospitality industry. I hope this will encourage more employers to work in partnership with accredited colleges.”

Garry Baldwin, senior hotel and restaurant inspector with the AA, added: “With an additional 11,000 chefs needed in the UK by 2022, college restaurants are absolutely vital to ensuring that the hospitality industry has the trained young chefs and front-of-house staff it requires to thrive.

“I’d like to congratulate Foxholes Restaurant – and indeed the other finalists – on helping to ensure that we have the very best home-grown talent to choose from.”
