Case study: Transitional skills programme from hospitality to care

As hospitality and tourism establishments closed their doors in March 2020 as a result of Covid-19, it was estimated up to 1 million jobs could be at risk across the industry. In a bid to support workers that were displaced, we facilitated a collaboration with CareTech and Skills for Health to offer redundant individuals the opportunity to gain the critical skills needed to secure employment within the care sector, helping to meet the increased staffing demand and support society’s most vulnerable.

To promote these opportunities to hospitality workers with the transferable skills that CareTech were looking for, the partnership teamed up with TotalJobs Group to profile 500 roles through the hospitality jobs site Caterer.com.
Successful candidates were offered the opportunity to undertake accredited online learning from Skills for Health, giving them the introductory knowledge to provide compassionate and high quality care and support. Their learning journey would then continue through a combination of on-the-job training and e-learning with CareTech - for a period of twelve weeks resulting in them achieving the industry recognised ‘Care Certificate’ qualification.

The initiative received an overwhelming response from more than 11,000 willing hospitality workers with sought after transferable skills. By the end of May this resulted in 3000 formal applications, with 170 applicants invited to interview and 28 formal job offers made to individuals, helping them retrain to work safely in a new role and a new sector.

Our partnership with People 1st International has given us a fantastic new source of talent with the right attributes and transferable skills we’re looking for. Having a package of support that not only identifies potential recruits with the same values and behaviours that are important to us, but also provides candidates with the introductory knowledge to prepare them to work safely in a new role and industry through online learning is enormously valuable.
